Six New Programs at Rogers Library

The Friends of Rogers Free Library are sponsoring a series of 6 new programs for caregivers and others who may be coping with a serious illness or interested in issues around aging. Programs are coordinated by Bonnie Evans, a geriatric nurse practitioner, caregiver advocate, and end-of-life doula. 

SEPTEMBER 3rd at 3 pm

A GUIDE TO HAVING DIFFICULT CONVERSATIONS.

Have you been reluctant to initiate discussions around sensitive issues: e.g. safe driving, medical treatments, end of life planning, or caregiving?  Let’s review tips on how to start and some techniques to encourage mutual problem solving.


SEPTEMBER 10th at 3 pm

UNDERSTANDING DEMENTIA-RELATED BEHAVIORS.  

These are often an expression of an unmet need of the individual or a reaction to the environment around them.  We will look at how to assess what may be contributing, how to intervene, and ways to modify the environment.


SEPTEMBER 24th at 4:30 pm

MEDICAL AID IN DYING (MAID) – A VIEW FROM BOTH SIDES.

There are now 10 states that offer MAID and it has been introduced in RI. Let’s look at why someone might consider this option, some of the differing opinions, and the basic guidelines and requirements.


OCTOBER 8th at 3 pm

SERVICES ACROSS THE CARE CONTINUUM.

Deb Burton, creator of the website RIElderInfo.com, will offer guidance on how to find and access various services across the continuum of healthcare (homecare, long-term care, memory care) and give an overview of her website.


OCTOBER 22nd at 3 pm

FOOD, ILLNESS & NOURISHMENT.

What do we do when a loved one is no longer interested in eating?  This is often part of an advanced illness. Food is associated with love, and this can be distressing to families.  Why does this happen and how can we continue to offer comfort and care?


NOVEMBER 19th at 3 pm

OUR OWN DEATH CAFÉ. 

Similar to our program in June, we will end this series over tea and cake and an informal discussion around life, death and what really matters to us.  Following a brief introduction, the conversation will be open.
